A great way to add interest and to
maximize the space in your kitchen is to have a kitchen island. There are four basic shapes of kitchen designs with islands that you can choose from. These are mainly defined by the counters and walls. Knowing each of them can help you select which kitchen island designs are best for you.

The first one is the “straight line” or the “single wall” kitchen. This is the kind of kitchen where everything is just on one wall. This design is commonly used on small houses or apartments. One major concern on this design however is the lack of cabinet space.

The “galley” is the second; this design has counters, appliances and cabinets on 2 parallel walls. Kitchen island designs such as this, is recommended for kitchen with only a single cook that will involve less walking around while cooking and needs a lot of cabinet space. Putting a modular kitchen cabinets island in this kind of kitchen will require you to have at least 7 feet of clear space between the parallel walls including the depth of the island.

A kitchen consisting of 2 sides at right angles towards each other is the “L” shape, which is the third design. The sink is normally found on one part of the “L” and the stove would be on the other. An advantage of this design is that it cuts your travel time between each sides but it is important that there is an enough space in-between. This design is the most popular shape used for kitchen island designs.

The last one is the “G” or the “U” shaped kitchen. This one has counters on 3 sides. This is usually made with 2 walls and the third side is the one with the cabinets underneath. Larger kitchens usually have this design, it also allows for a “breakfast bar” or other similar seating.

Aside from indoor kitchen, there are also some outdoor kitchen island designs that you can add to your home. Remember that it is required for kitchen island designs to have at least 3 feet clearing around to allow movement around the area.
